Wigan men’s 1st team started the new season with a tough home game against Bowdon. After two close games last season Wigan knew that it would be tight match.
The first half was a tough battle in the midfield with Wigan having the better of possession and chances on goal. With chances hitting the post, clearances off the line, good saves from the Bowdon goalkeeper and poor finishing from the Wigan strikers, Wigan could have been out of sight. It took a well worked short cor…ner to give Wigan a 1-0 into half time.
In the second half Wigan continued to take the game to Bowdon, not allowing the opposition many chances in front of goal. When the second goal eventually came from a deflected pass into the D, it seemed to settle Wigan and they went on to score 3 more with all 3 converted from pressure on the defence leaving Wigan players free to score.
The home team were then caught twice on counter attacks by Bowdon as Wigan looked to score more goals and loosing possession high up the field. A topped hit that deceived the Wigan goalkeeper and an excellent finish for the 2nd made it 5-2! Wigan went back to what was successful earlier in the game and managed to get another goal before the final whistle to make the final result 6-2.
Wigan know that it could have been a lot more, but with the men’s 2s, ladies 1st and 2nd teams all winning it is good start for all the hockey section. Well done to all teams and those who supported.
Wigan 1st team goals: Andy B 3, Tom H, Rob U and Ralph N.
